Resources for Writers
Below is a list of my tried-and-true recommendations of the editors, communities, and writing blogs that have helped me most as a writer. I hope they're helpful to you on your own writing journey!
Editorial Services
Katherine "Kati" Standefer is an outstanding writer who offers editorial services and a trauma writing doula service. She has extensive teaching experience and holds certifications from the Arizona Trauma Institute. I would not have been able to write some of Cactus Country's more emotionally difficult chapters without Kati's work with me.
Abby Muller is one of the sharpest editors I've had the pleasure of working with. As my editor at Abrams, her insight helped shape Cactus Country into the best possible version of itself before publication. She now offers a comprehensive list of editorial services which include query letter help, editorial assessment, developmental edits and line edits.
Publicists
Andrew Gibeley can spread the word about a new book like no one else! I don't think I could have asked for a more creative, hands-on, and invested publicist for Cactus Country; Thanks to Andrew's amazing work, my memoir was featured in the LA Times, Publisher's Weekly, Esquire, Ms Magazine, among many other national and regional publications.
Classes & Groups
Literary Cleveland offers a variety of writing classes, workshops, craft talks, conferences, and more. Many of its events are held virtually and can be accessed from anywhere in the country. Class prices are reasonable and membership affordable to most. Scholarships are also available.
Sustenance is an incredibly warm writing community lead by the poet Joy Sullivan. The group focuses primarily on poetry and lyric essaying. Membership includes access to generative writing sessions, craft talks with visiting writers, community writing challenges, workshops with peer feedback, and much more.
Writing Blogs & Newsletters
Brevity (founded in 1997) is the oldest online literary magazine still in operation. Though the magazine itself publishes a selection brief nonfiction essays three times a year, its blog runs articles by and for the writing community almost every day! As a young writer I got most of my writing tips and news from the Brevity blog—it is always open for submissions, too.
